Are you ready to challenge your photography skills? Ready to push yourself to a new level? Photographing ordinary people does not always feel so easy but you know the reward once you see the image. We will cover how to communicate effectively and honestly with people you want to photograph without feeling like you are "taking:"something from them. You will get experience street shooting from the hip to get spontaneous and yet well composed images. We will have some practice sessions beforehand to get warmed up. We begin with a class session, lecture and questions.
We start late so we can make use of the evening light.

Photographing Tip on Clothing

OK so you have got to ditch the logos, patterns and circles on those clothes. When photographing a person all those things on clothing distract. Instead ask your clients (or if you are the person in front of the camera) wear solid complimentary colors that go well with your skin type and hair. Or simplify with one pattern to break the rules

Questions to Ask a Photographer before Hiring

ON the Knot they pose some great questions to ask when looking for a wedding or bridal photographer. How many years have you been a "professional" photographer? What is your training? (Degrees are becoming important again). However I don't agree with "is the photographer part of an association".

I have belonged to several associations and it is most often about handing over the money monthly sometimes hundreds of dollars to have that association.

It is not about whether the photographer is a good shooter or has a degree (I have a Master's degree) in Visual Communications from Ohio University. If a photographer can throw together about 10 decent images shot over the last 20 years and has the money they are in.
I do maintain a membership with National Press Photographers and Sports Shooters because of the friendships I have there.

IN these times of economic difficulties, it is period that we can take a breather and remember what our dreams were in the first place. Worrying doesn't seem to make anything different. I know that people (TV) has been telling us for a long time that we NEED lots of material things in our lives and we have mostly all bought into it. So our workdays have become longer because we have to pay for all the stuff they've convinced us that we need. But now thanks to extra time off we can get the clutter out of our head.

What is important? What's the matter with driving and older car or learning to buy differently?

In January I have 3 options that are open to me in my photography career. It's exciting but scary. Scary because I want it to be blessed by God and all 3 things seem equally "right" to do. I haven't felt that I should do one over another yet. So I'm looking at the past and realizing that whenever God gives me something to do I never know it until the last 5 minutes. I am trying to keep the peace and clarity in my heart and not over think everything.
I wish I could do all three but it would be impossible.

God Knows When I don't

Now I have 4 sites and am thinking I'm in over my head. It might be time to downsize. I don't even visit facebook anymore as I'm so busy with blogs. There seem to be 2 things that have the opposite affect on me. 1. Is whenever I try to "diet" I gain a few pounds. 2. Whenever I attempt to make life more simple, I create more complications.
Every time I finally become satisfied with my website,http://www.BorkgrenPhoto.net I see some really awesome design above and beyond my knowledge to create and I think, "I'll never get off the computer". I really enjoy meeting real people in person. I love being in my real life.

Spending more time alone with God is the only way that I ever get real peace in my heart and yet I deny that wonderful time with scurrying to and fro with all these "things".

Before you buy a bigger Megapixel Camera consider this

Buying a camera with more Mega pixels does not mean higher quality imagines. If the sensor is not larger for all those mega pixels the camera has to create more noise to compensate.(fuzzier pictures)

If a company just keeps stuffing more megapixels on the same sensor overloading that sensor you actually will end up with less quality instead of more. If you are beginning to look around for Christmas photography deals, make sure you don't fall for the more is better ads.
Unless you plan on making billboard sized images you don't really need all them pixels anyway. Before you buy consider the size of pictures you will be printing and buy accordingly. There are cameras with "bigger" sized pixels but that is just getting too technical for here. If you want more infor be sure and do your google homework before buying something that will give you less for your money.

I couldn't believe it when I saw this beautiful light shining on Joel & Krista at their wedding. I could see that they were being so blessed as well as was everyone attending. During their wedding everyone joined in singing several songs with them. These two have prepared to focus their lives on God and giving to people. They will certainly celebrate a beautiful life together. They are running off to Disney World to celebrate their wedding and the beginning.
Umm it looks like I always lose a little contrast when transferring to the blog. This picture was taken with one light next to my camera as a fill light on their faces. The main light filtered in through windows.

I am always trying to unite my two worlds. The one where I spend in places such as the Congo where my children friends sleep on lava rock for beds, awake to soldiers with guns hovering over them and are blessed by the crumbs falling their way by the rest of the world. In contrast I witness the luxury of love, laughter and passion. My helplessness restored by gestures of the love, the bride & groom fumbling for the words to say "I love you", the glorious moments of destination weddings, elegant brides,and those who enjoy the luxurious passion of life. Each world pulls me to it. I struggle to let go of the one I leave to enter the other. Always.

I have been spending a lot of time in planes this last week. While the lengthy sitting and sleeping gets pretty boring, I tend to get to sit next to the coolest people. God always has a hand in this venture I am most sure of it. I sat next to Col. Malcolm Burr II on the Middle East flight from Germany. He was on his way back to Iraq. We enjoyed a most enlightening conversation. One thing I know God always has a hand in who is in that other seat. I'm putting up this picture for 2 reasons. 1. I'm considering going back to the M.E. for awhile and two I have received a bunch of emails asking me about this picture that I took while in Iraq. I was on patrol with the 1st Cav unit when they pulled over to help some brothers dismantle an IED. It was actually a trap and at this moment the humvee was hit by a mortar. I was trying to not shake while I shot but as you see I was shaking. I had left my flac jacket and helmet inside because I thought it was safe. Never assume such silly things when on assignment. The gunner got hit but survived. I shot this picture as rocks and shrapnel was falling all around me. Then I too threw myself on the ground to protect my eyes and head. If you look closely you can see one of the guys leaning next to the humvee trying to avoid the shrapnel flying everywhere.

Where is that girl now? Mike and Giselle are so much fun. They came from Chicago to have their photo shoot- really just an excuse to indulge in the greenery of Oregon. Mike & Giselle-- brainy, sweet and fun- did I say fun, fun fun? It rained during our complete photo shoot but they endured and laughed over it. This picture was taken during a warm up break in Eugene Oregon.

Showing Belice's Story

Each time nine-year-old Belice leaves her home to get water she passes soldiers like those who raped her.
Belice hesitates to go get water and insists one of her siblings come along.

In actuality he had been living tied up to a gate chain by rubble eating raw maize. His favorite food is ground turkey burgers with zucchini. (it's actually very late night and I'm prescheduling this for Sunday)

I photograph from Oregon across the USA to your wedding destination anywhere on the globe.
India Weddings are infused with oranges, reds lots of amazing food and they last a very long time. Their wedding began the night before informally and lasted for a good 24 hours. This may explain why the couple does not smile a lot as well as that this is only the second time that they have met. (I hope hope that they are good for each other). The woman's parents pay the grooms parents at least a year ahead for the prospective marriage. The woman will move into the man's family home until they someday get a home of their own.
This wedding in Chennai India was lovely even under florescent lights. A nightmare for color correcting but I can deal.
After seeing Slumdog Millionaire tonight I got that extra breathe to at least put up a few pictures from the beautiful wedding in India.
Incredible colors. Not exactly a destination wedding as they obvious live there. The food is amazing. The people incredible and capable of staying awake extremely long hours.

I took these pictures of Barack Obama right after he handed me my sound recorder which a friend had dropped. When I was in the Congo a man said to me, "I just realized that Barack Obama is the president of America". I gave away my Barack Obama cap to dear Cheriff in the Congo who very much deserved it. He now has the only Barack Obama hat in the E. Congo as far as I know. Can I explain to you how proud he is of that cap. The cap came to me as a going away gift from Amy Marash.
When I met Barack that day, the day he returned my recorder to me his eyes spoke-"kindness". I was a child when President Kennedy was shot and our hope was dismissed. This is like a second chance. Today I received a quite big donation check in the mail from a precious friend urging me to do something honorable with it. I learned in Iraq to say a prayer over any money that comes into my palms. So today I held it up to God and asked a blessing and the best use for it. All good things come from above (and sometimes through the hands of amazing people).
Life is Preciously Amazing!
My favorite saying is "An enemy is only one's whose story I have not heard".

Here is the opening page from Professional Photographer's Magazine who interviewed me for their January 2009 Professional Photographer's opening year issue. The boy in the picture is fighting over buckets. An aid group, Samaritan's Purse, had brought buckets to show how to purify water. No one cared about the water. The people made swords out of sticks. We watched it get pretty violent. One of the Aid workers pulled me out. I didn't feel anyone would attack me but then you never really know when individuals begin a mob. I Believe in Miracles

I shot my first weddings last year and I had once said I would never shoot weddings. I love love love photographing weddings now.
I get to be around couples in love. Infectious love that fills me at each wedding ceremony.
I had been seeking for a path a way to balance out the war and violence that I cover as a photojournalist and now I get to spend days with people in love.
The hardest thing this last year was that my cat I had carried back from Iraq was run over by a car. I will forever miss "Sapper".

On the top ten list of really great:

I won the photo competition and the ShootQ grant set up by Rachel Lacour her husband Andrew Niessen and judged by Dawn Davis, Joe Bussinick,Jasmine Star and more.
This gave me the passage to Eastern Congo where I met nine-year-old Belice, her family and her village. It was if Belice and her village were waiting for me to arrive. I had made plans before I went but they each fell apart one-by-one.
Meeting Belice was random nothing but serendipity. Not really. I know before I could have imagined it, it was a setup, the planning had already taken place. And so perfectly.

Tips on How to Love Life

I found the Congolese people to be fun, resilient and very fun. These children at a refugee camp in the Eastern Congo taught me a song. Their contagious laughter is amazing when you know what they have experienced. Many of the girls have been raped, the boys bullied and threatened yet laughter presides!

My Volcanoe (Really)

This volcano in the background is actually called "My Volcano". It's so cool as anyone that speaks its name is calling it "My Volcano". So if you ask Belice, "where are you going this morning, she might answer to "my volcano". Believe me the first couple of times I heard this is confused me. I am rather naíeve sometimes for someone who has been around so much.
As hard as life is in the Eastern Congo, there are some beautiful attributes in everyday life. Happy New Year!

Taxi? This is it in the Congo

They call me a clinger. But I bet you would be a clinger too here in the Congo. When I get on a moto I wrap my arms around the driver's waist and intertwine my fingers. I usually have my camera bag behind the driver's back and my backpack on my back. Trying to stay on the seat takes talent and I am getting it down. This is the taxi equivalent in the Congo at least in Goma,Congo.

We begin each trip dodging volcanic rocks, mud holes,old holes,garbage,branches not to mention the thousands of motorcycles also dodging the same garbage along their way. As the passenger I am rarely actually touch the seat until we come to a stop.

We pass by hundreds of SUV's with AID logos plastered on the sides. It makes me think that the only traffic jam is caused by these giant AID vehicles from Medicines sin Fronteirs,Save-the-Children, USAID, oh my gosh there are so many AID groups here, it is hard not to mix up all the acronyms. Really if we counted you would think that everyone in this country would be well fed and housed in sufficient homes. Unfortunately this is not the case.
